about

The bishop of St. Mary’s cathedral is quietly kidnapped by foreign mercenaries
instructed to bring him unharmed to their employers palace. To ensure he has no clues as to the location of his captor’s estate he is bound and blindfolded before enduring a dizzying three hour carriage ride through a maze of roads and alleyways meant to hide their route. Once at his destination, he is led into a lavish town dwelling noticeably devoid of any identifying crests or coats of arms. He is then asked to perform the sacrament of extreme unction for the seemingly healthy but distraught daughter of the mysterious nobleman. It is explained she was harboring the bastard child of the disgraced king. The Bishop does not understand, but nevertheless performs last rites for the girl. Just as the final “Amen” leaves his lips, a black hooded man with a broadsword steps out from behind the curtain…

lyrics

In the still of nocturne
In a dark tranquility
Servant of the faithful
I repose so blissfully
A violent sound alarms
A rapping insistently
A violent sound that violates
The sanctity
Of this cathedral
Structure built by men at odds
Two towers vainly reach the sky
To touch the gods
One stands guard against
A war we cannot win
The other is a prison
For men who murder kin

A violent sound again
A rapping insistently
A violent sound that violates
The sanctity
I awake to a sound at the door
A shape beside my bed
I am bound and led away
A sack placed on my head
My captors beg forgiveness
“Please understand, your grace,
We take you to where you are needed
You must not see this place”
We ride for hours
But this journey feels like days
We ride for hours
Winding through this devil’s maze

My journey is at it’s end
We enter warmth and light
I am relieved
Of the obstruction to my site
A palace hall
A place where princes receive their guests
My host stand noble before me
In decor devoid of crests
“Your holiness,” he begs,
“Do this thing for me -
My only daughter
Stands corrupted by that fiend”
The child she kneels before me
I perform the final rite
The out from behind the curtain
Steps death dealing wraith black as night

Her head hits the floor
Blinking but once more
Staring up at me
My lord is this to be?
Her head hits the floor
Blinking but once more
Staring back at me
To my Lord I deliver thee

I return to the unmarked carriage
I refuse the offer of wine
Then the servant of death falls limp
Poison, the drink I did decline
We rode for hours
A sack placed over my head
We rode for hours
Perhaps I am already dead
In this cathedral
Structure built by men at odds
Two towers vainly reach the sky
To touch the gods
One stands guard against
A war we cannot win
The other remains a prison
For men who murder kin
